New Website

Mike June 12th, 2009

So, I consult. I’ve been a engineering consultant for about the past 3 years on all sorts of projects ranging from pretty complex websites, facebook games, mobile phone apps and some embedded computing.

Even though I’ve spent vast amounts of time working on other peoples sites (including my wifes), my own consulting company’s site has been sadly neglected. So, I finally posted an update for it. Check it out at www.adastrasystems.com. Its not all that it could be, but I’m getting there. As they say, “a shoe cobbler’s children go shoeless”.

As you can see, I’m trying to morph my company into an underwater and aerial robotics company. I’ll get there, one day.

Oh, and if you’re wondering about the name of my company, its based on one of my favorite latin sayings; “Per aspera ad astra”, which roughly translates to “To the stars through difficulties”, or less formally “its a rough road that leads to the stars”. I love this because my biggest dream is to work in the space industry, but we’re not there yet. So, in the meantime, the oceans await.

Been busy

Mike June 2nd, 2009

Been crazy busy lately, and my blog has suffered as a result. I’m currently busy working on a contract for a Facebook game. I can’t reveal the details yet, but hopefully I will be able to soon. Its for a big publisher, and its starting to look pretty cool. I don’t typically work for the games industry, they tend to treat engineers really badly. The hours are long, pay isn’t all that great and scope creep is out of control. But, hey, such is life. Engineers aren’t treated that well anymore.

I’m also thinking of quitting contracting and going back to a normal job. I have a potential offer at the local university, managing the lab and working on some cool projects at the VAST lab at UCCS. And, they’ll pay for me to do a PhD along the way. And, I’ll get to play with robots and other cools toys again. Sweet.

Writing again…

Just updated Chapter 4 of dreams of man, hope you enjoy!

Chapter 4: Fire Storm

Mike January 20th, 2009

The ship rocked violently from side to side as its pilot desperately evaded the incoming fire, slamming Nathan from side to side in his grav-harness, the inertial dampeners struggling to compensate.

Through the tiny portholes, the enemy fire bathed the cramped interior with flash after flash of intense light. Nathan stared out, unable to turn away from the scene played out before him. Two massive fleets engaged in a pitched and desperate battle.

He could make out the nearby cruiser, Sargasso, which was escorting them during the drop. She was taking heavy fire, the impacts of enemy fire impacting on her shields with an angry brilliant blue flare as the energy dissipated around the entire ship in a startling, beautiful and terrifying display.

Nathan couldn’t see where the enemy fire was coming from, with a mere thought Sarah responded by displaying a tactical overlay using his neural interface. To Nathan, a holographic display appeared floating several feet above the cabin’s floor. It showed the positions of the fleet as green dots in a gently revolving three-dimensional display of the battle-space. Red dots were added to indicate the known positions of enemy ships. The overall picture showed the main body of the fleet directly engaged with the enemy, with another body of ships supporting the troop drop. It was unusual, Nathan would have expected to be dropped in after a major fleet engagement, not during. Which worried him, it had the distinct feel of desperation.

Sarah highlighted the Sargasso and zoomed in, Nathan could see that the thousands of tiny troop ships were separated into smaller groups each with an escort cruiser. He could also see enemy ships moving in on his position, 2 of them heading rapdidly towards the Sargasso.

The Sargasso broke from the drop ship formation and sped towards the oncoming attackers, angrily returning fire at the nearest. She rapidly faded from Nathan’s view as she disappeared into the darkness of space, illuminated sporadically by shield strikes of the enemy fire. The immense distances and colossal speeds of these warships meant that she rapidly disappeared from Nathan’s view, and as she faded away he grew increasingly uneasy.

The flotilla of drop ships sped onwards towards the planet below, unguarded but undeterred.

“3 Minutes to Atmo” screamed the pilot’s nervous voice over his suites intercom.

Nathan knew the Sargasso stood little chance against the oncoming attackers, but her desperate move may have bought them enough time to hit atmosphere, so much sacrifice for this worthless planet. He never understood why such a large fleet had been mobilized to protect this planet. So many had been lost, but why draw the line here?

“2 Minutes”  shouted the pilot, this time sounding a little less nervous.

Nathan summoned the holographic display once more, he searched for the Sargossa but she was gone. The 2 attackers were now limping towards them. The display showed tactical readings detailing the damage they had sustained, enough to slow them but they were still coming.

“1 Minute”

They were close, Nathan unconsciously held his breath as he watched the 2 dots on the display heading towards them.

“30 Seconds”

So close, almost in weapons range.

“15 Seconds”

Almost.

“10″

They opened up, firing volley after volley. Nathan watched as the munitions and high-energy plasma sped towards them. The trailing drop ships were instantly annihilated, taking the brunt of the fire.

“5. 4. 3. ”

Another volley leapt from the attackers. Another wave of drop ships were annihilated, but they were on the very edge of the atmosphere and the shock wave blasted against the hull of the drop ship sending the small craft spinning out of control into the atmosphere. There was a tremendous, deafening thud as they were struck by debris.

“We’re hit! Shit, we’re hit! ” screamed the pilot.

The cabin shook violently as they took another hit. The small craft started to spin faster and faster rapidly descending towards the planets surface. The grav-harness desperately tried to compensate for the immense g forces, but failed to compensate completely.

Nathan struggle to remain conscious….

Best of 2008’s Photography

Mike December 18th, 2008

Well, another year has flown by and I’d thought I’d mark its passing by sharing some of my favourite pictures from the year. As some of you guys already know, I shoot for my wife’s wedding photography business as much as time allows, check her website out www.charlottegeary.com and check out her awesome blog. She blogs way more than I do, with plenty of updates from our life!

As an engineer, I’ve never considered myself an artist so I really enjoy the chance to explore that side of myself – through both photography and writing. I never would have considered ever getting involved in the wedding photography business, and it was only out of a desire to help my wife’s business that I ever got involved. And, I was really suprised to find that I really enjoyed it!

One of the great things about doing this, is that I think we can get jaded about the world because of the news that we read. But, then you go to a wedding and see this;

Father-Daughter dance

Father-Daughter dance

And this makes me realize that people are good.

Young love

Young love

One of the things I love the most, is seeing an older married couple dancing like this. I know when Charlotte and I are at our kids wedding, we’ll dance like this. When we’re at our grand-kids wedding, we’ll dance like this. What could sum up a life well lived than that?

Old Love

Old Love

I love catching moments like this, that is a look of love.

The moment

The moment

Course, there are also the kiddos. They make the life of a photographer so much easier with moments like;

Is that a guilty look?

Is that a guilty look?

I like to break the rules, like rolling around in the grass and doing things you’re not supposed to do, like shooting into the light. Course, if you’re willing to break the rules you get this (and this really was a candid moment);

Breaking the rules

Breaking the rules

And, of course, as I am British, lets not forget the drinking;

Booze

You can find more of my favourite pictures from 2008 at http://charlottegeary.smugmug.com/gallery/6853530_dsUcf.

Enjoy, and I’d love to hear about what you’ve been up to this last year, and plans for the future!

Hand….

Mike December 12th, 2008

Yet again I’ve been slacking and haven’t posted anything lately, but this time its for a legitimate reason – honest! I was playing footy (or soccer, if you prefer) last week and thanks to a badly placed foot from an opponent, my hand got busted up. I had an x-ray, and nothing broken – but its multi-colored and feeling a little worse for wear. So, typing has been tricky of late.

As I’ve posted a foot x-ray before, here is my hand!

Work in progress

Mike November 19th, 2008

Just posted a draft of the latest chapter for “Dreams of Man”, its not finished but I figured I’d post just so you can see whats going on, I’ll continue to update this post as I go. Comments are more than welcome, but remember this is just a draft (so be gentle, its quite scary to post stories especially when they’re not finished)!

And remember, the whole story can be seen on the “Dreams of Man” page, with the chapters laid out in order for easier reading.

Yay… writing again

Mike November 18th, 2008

Been a while, but I finally got past some writers block and I’m working on ‘Dreams of Man’ once again, I sketched out the next 4-5 chapters tonight and hope to start fleshing them out very very soon. I know, I keep saying that. But, this time I mean it. The hardest part has been figuring out the plots and how they tie together, and developing the characters and working on the new ones I want to introduce.

This is my first attempt at a continuous story, up until now I’ve just written short fragments (short stories with no real plot). Its much harder. Way harder, but fun….

On AI: Multiple personality syndrome.

Mike November 7th, 2008

There are many visions of the future of AI, from Terminator to the Matrix. But, if AI were to emerge. True AI. Then where will it emerge from? I’ve thought a lot about this topic, even feeling some sense of guilt by even working in the field. After all, should we even develop AI?

I gave a lecture on Robots in Culture, in which we talked about various aspects of AI in modern life, as part of that I showed a movie clip from iRobot. This movie is interesting (great book too, Asimov is amazing) as it shows some of the various aspects of how we perceive robots. They are our saviours, helpers, slaves but at the same time, our greatest nightmare. What I find more interesting, is all the AI that is lurking silently in the background. There is the obvious, such as robotic cars. But, there is the less obvious. After all, who thinks of their Tivo as AI?

So, in a nutshell. That is my point. We fear AI, and the future that may or may not come to pass. But, slowly, and surely, we surround ourselves with AI. Its everywhere, and becoming more pervasive and connected.

And thats where it will come from, everywhere.

Which makes it more like us than you think. We evolved the same way, in fact our brain and nervous system is like a series of interconnected circuits, some are even autonomous and independent. And, from this mess of interconnected neural circuity arises intelligence, our sense of self. Sometimes, it goes wrong and those seperate systems emerge not as one intelligence, but multiple.

If that can happen to us, then maybe there is even more chance it will happen to machines as they evolve and emerge.

So, maybe the first AI’s will be kinda weird.

Feet

Mike November 3rd, 2008

Ugh, so my foot hurts. Long story, but basically I have screwed up foot joints that are slowly wearing out. Ick. So, today, went to the doc and was given Celebrex. Yep, I am now officially old.

But, check out this cool picture of my foot – you can see where I had surgery, I had the big bone shortened and some screws put in to hold it all together! Well, at least now I’m a cyborg!!
